As we commemorate International Women’s Month this year 2017, we need to reflect how far we have gone as a country in as far as adhering to to Constitutional detects regarding the rights of women.
The Constitution of Zimbabwe Section 80 on Rights of Women, stipulates that:
(1) Every woman has full and equal dignity of the person with men and this includes equal opportunities in political, economic and social activities.
(2) Women have the same rights as men regarding the custody and guardianship of children, but an Act of Parliament may regulate how those rights are to be exercised.
(3) All laws, customs, traditions and cultural practices that infringe the rights of women conferred by this Constitution are void to the extent of the infringement.
It is therefore important for all stakeholders, leaders, duty bearers and juristic persons at every level of governance and decision making to know this and ensure that it is fulfilled because failure to fulfil this Section of the Constitution is a violation of human rights!
(Happy Women’s Month)
